Innovation, how to start?

January 18, 2009 Leave a comment

A few weeks ago I was asked the following “How would you start the Innovation process in a company?”

Well at first we need to ask a few questions:

  1. Do people know what Innovation is all about?
  2. Are they willing to participate in an active way
  3. Is it supported by the management?

If the answer on all 3 questions is yes then we can start creating and providing.

  • Awareness: people need to understand why innovation matters, why it’s important to innovate and so on.
  • Involvement: people need to be involved in the process, they need to know that there opinion matters and is appreciated.
  • The environment: depending on peoples personality you must create an appropriate environment.
  • Mission, Vision and Values: Explain to people the mission, vision and values of the company. Everybody involved needs to understand and most important support them.
  • Communication: communication between departments, business units etc. is of the at most importance in a innovation process
  • Tools: don’t use the old fashion “idea box” because it will turn your innovation process into a “My little secret” process. The more people know what the ideas of the rest are the more feedback you will get, it’s called the “The power of the crowd”.
